What Is It

Interstate Vehicle Transport (Penghantaran Kenderaan Rentas Negeri) is the logistics and regulatory process of shipping a motor vehicle (car or motorcycle) via sea freight (Roll-on/Roll-off - RoRo vessel or container) between Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak).

Who Is Eligible

  • Registered owner of the vehicle (citizens, expats).
  • Authorized representatives (requires a letter of authorization from the owner or bank if under active loan).
  • Required Documents

  • Vehicle Registration Card (VOC): Original document.
  • Bank Release Letter: Consent letter from the financing bank if the vehicle has an active loan.
  • Owner MyKad: Copy of identity card.
  • Insurance Cover Note: Copy of valid motor insurance.
  • Customs Declaration (Borang K3): Required for movement of tax-free/exempted goods between zones (e.g. from Labuan or Langkawi, or general customs tracking).
  • Step-by-Step Procedure

    1. Choose Shipping Agent: Contact an approved marine freight forwarding company offering RoRo shipping services between Port Klang (Peninsula) and Kuching/Kota Kinabalu/Labuan. 2. Bank Approval: If the car is on a bank loan, apply for a release letter from your bank (takes 3-5 days). 3. Deliver Vehicle to Port: Drive the vehicle to the designated port terminal (e.g., Northport in Port Klang) or arrange ground transport pick-up. 4. Customs Check: Submit details to customs agents. Clear fuel and remove all personal belongings from the vehicle before loading. 5. Voyage & Collection: The voyage takes 7 to 10 days. Upon arrival at the destination port (e.g., Sepanggar Port in Kota Kinabalu), present your shipping order and ID to clear port authority gatepass, and drive your car out.

    Cost & Processing Time

  • Cost: Shipping rates range from RM1,200 to RM1,800 for a standard car, and RM500 to RM800 for a motorcycle (does not include port clearance charges or marine insurance).
  • Processing Time: Total transit and clearance time takes 10 to 14 days.
  • Where to Apply

  • Port operators and licensed logistics forwarding agencies at major ports (Port Klang, Kuching Port, Kota Kinabalu Port).
  • Important Notes

  • Ensure your car insurance has a marine transit add-on; standard motor insurance policies do not cover damages incurred while the vehicle is at sea.
  • Wash your car and take photos of all sides before handing it over to the shipper as proof for any shipping claims.
