Climbing Mount Kinabalu (4,095m) in Sabah requires official climbing permits issued by Sabah Parks. Slots are strictly capped per day, and bookings must be made months in advance.
Who Is Eligible
Open to local and international climbers.
Climbers must be physically fit; climbers under 16 years old must hire a dedicated mountain guide.
Required Fees & Permits
Sabah Parks Permit Fee:
- Malaysian Adults: RM100.
- International Adults: RM400.
Mountain Guide Fee: Mandatory (approx. RM350 per guide for up to 5 climbers).
Climbing Insurance: Mandatory (RM10 per climber).
Laban Rata Accommodation: Mandatory package (includes overnight stay and meals).
Step-by-Step Booking Procedure
1. Book Slot: Book a climbing package (usually 2-day-1-night) via Sutera Sanctuary Lodges or registered travel agencies 3 to 6 months in advance.
2. Permit Registration: Provide climber passport/MyKad details to the agency to register the climbing permit with Sabah Parks.
3. Climb Day Registration: Arrive at Kinabalu Park HQ by 8:00 AM. Present passport/MyKad, sign the safety indemnity form, and collect your climber ID tag.
4. Guide Assignment: Get assigned a licensed mountain guide at Kinabalu Gate (Timpohon Gate) before starting the hike.
Cost & Processing Time
Cost: Total package cost (accommodation, permit, food, guide) ranges from RM800 to RM1,500 for Malaysians and RM2,500 to RM4,500 for foreigners.
Processing Time: Booking must be made 3 to 6 months ahead due to high demand.
