What Is It

Batu Caves is a limestone hill featuring a series of caves and cave temples, serving as a prominent Hindu pilgrimage site dedicated to Lord Murugan. The site is famous for its 140-foot-tall golden statue of Lord Murugan and the 272 rainbow-colored climbing stairs leading to the Cathedral Cave.

  • Step-by-Step Procedure

    1. Dress Appropriately: Ensure you follow the mandatory temple dress code. Shoulders and knees must be covered (no short skirts, shorts, or sleeveless shirts). 2. Rent Sarong (If needed): If your attire does not comply, rent a sarong cloth wrap at the staircase entrance counter. 3. Climb Stairs: Climb the 272 colored steps to reach the main Temple Cave (Cathedral Cave). Maintain a steady pace and use handrails. 4. Cathedral Cave Visit: Explore the cave interior featuring Hindu shrines. Avoid touching religious offerings or icons. 5. Return Sarong: Return the rented sarong wrap upon descending to collect your deposit.

  • Important Notes

  • Batu Caves is home to a large population of wild macaques (monkeys). Do not carry open food, plastic bags, or feed the monkeys, as they can become aggressive and snatch personal belongings.
  • During the annual Thaipusam festival (January/February), the site experiences high congestion with over 1 million devotees. Traffic plans and public transport guidelines are issued by authorities prior to the event.
